Introduction
How to change the battery of a BMW E87 118D
Parts
-
-
Using jumper cables, connect the 12V battery (make sure it is fully charged) to the + and - located in the engine compartment: Connect the - of the battery to the ground of the car (hexagonal steel piece) (see photo),
-
Then connect the + of the battery to the + socket of the car located under its red plastic protection. (see photo)
-
-
-
Raise the trunk floor and hold it with a wedge to make the work easier.
-
Empty the compartment located to the left of the battery.
-
Remove the plastic separation between the battery and the housing by starting to lift it from the "rear seats" side, pivot it and remove it.
-
Remove the plastic cover from the battery support bar by sliding it towards the front of the car, then unscrew the 2 nuts and remove the bar.
-
-
-
Using a 10 extension wrench, unscrew the battery support bracket. This bracket is at the bottom of the tray, on the negative side.
-
-
-
Start by disconnecting the negative with a 10 wrench, unscrewing the screw then lifting the connector
-
Disconnect the "plus", located under a small plastic hatch. (same connector as the negative)
-
Do not unscrew anything else!
-
Using a flat-head screwdriver, gently pry up the two steel tabs holding the "plus" block (located on each side of the battery) and gently lift the "plus" block.
-
Lift the battery on the "plus" side (therefore tilt it), then pull it towards the side of the housing that you emptied previously, and remove it from the trunk.
-
-
-
Connect the overflow on the "plus" side, and the cap on the "minus" side. (Recover them from the old battery if necessary). Make sure that the overflow pipe is properly connected on both sides.
-
To install the new battery, simply follow this tutorial in reverse order.
-
Wait several kilometers for the low battery ODB message to disappear. (If displayed)

Thanks for the tutorial.
I just changed the battery.
No need for an auxiliary battery, just the date and time to set afterwards.
On the other hand, you need to register the battery so that the ODB takes into account that the battery is new.
I have a BMW 1 series 118d diesel year 2005, I just changed the battery I had an 80v and I put in a 100v one is it serious
Thanks to the author of this post for the photos that allowed me to recharge my battery.
Is it possible to replace the auxiliary battery with a charger in “charge” mode? No risk of damaging the on-board electronics? Thanks for this tutorial!
Hello
Is it imperative to install an auxiliary battery? Thank you
