Introduction

Here are the steps to follow to change the spark plugs on the 1.6l 16v petrol engine of the Xsara phase 2.

  1.
Start by unscrewing the 6 screws using a T20 torx screwdriver

Once the screws are removed, lift the cover to unclip the oil breather hose held to the cover then remove the cover.

  2.
Now you need to move the oil breather hoses.

To do this, use a flat screwdriver, pressing on the yellow clip while pulling it outwards to remove it. Do the same for the second hose.

Once the hoses are disconnected, release the small hose circled in green and move the assembly to finally have access to the coil

  3.
Disconnect the coil plug by pressing on the metal ring while pulling downwards

Unscrew the 4 screws, still with the T20 torx imprint. And finally extract the coil by pulling upwards to remove it.

Access to the 4 spark plugs is now possible. Now simply unscrew them and remove them using a 16mm spark plug wrench or a ratchet with extension + 16mm long socket.

  4.
Once the spark plugs are out, compare them to the new ones before reassembly

Proceed to reassemble the spark plugs by screwing them in by hand with the 16 socket without tightening fully and complete the final tightening with the torque wrench to a torque of 28 Nm.

    • Do not hesitate to clean the spark plug wells with a blower or vacuum cleaner to remove any accumulated dirt.

    • Continue the operations in reverse order for reassembly.

    • When restarting the vehicle, if there is a knock, check the tightening of the spark plugs if they were not tightened to the correct torque using a torque wrench.
