Introduction

How to use jumper cables (or crocodile clips) to recharge your car battery and start it.

Position a second vehicle opposite the broken down one.

It is important to respect the order of connection of the cables to the battery terminals in order to avoid any risk of accident.

In fact, when connecting the last clamp, more or less significant sparks may be created. To limit the risks, make sure you have closed all the doors, the light and windshield wiper controls in zero position, the ignition off or the key in your hand.

A dead battery can be characterized by dim meter lights and a starter that is too slow to crank the engine.

Your vehicle's battery can be found in different locations depending on the car model. The battery is mainly found in the engine compartment, trunk or under the seats.

    • In a classic case, the battery is located in the engine compartment, the connection terminal (+) is also located there when it is installed elsewhere, start by lifting the hood of both vehicles.

  4.
Connect the black clamp to the terminal - from the donor battery

Connect the second black clamp to a conductive element linked to the ground, ideally on the engine or on a pad provided for this purpose on the bodywork

Do not connect the clamp to the negative terminal of the discharged battery

Once the two vehicles are connected, start the energy-providing car to charge the empty or discharged battery using its alternator, turn off unnecessary consumers such as headlights or ventilation to promote energy transmission

  6.
After a few minutes of waiting, slightly accelerate the donor engine and then try to start the broken-down vehicle.

Depending on the batteries and the engine, recharging can take more or less time. Diesel vehicles have a more energy-intensive battery, which takes longer to recharge.
