Start by raising the rear of the vehicle using a jack placed at the plastic lifting areas on the rocker panel. Raise until the rear wheel is off the ground. Place a jack stand for added safety.
-
Remove the rear wheel by unscrewing the 5 size 17 wheel studs.
-
-
-
Once the right rear wheel is removed, you have access to the brake caliper which holds the pads.(photo 1)
-
Photo 2: standing on the axle side, unscrew the column screws (size 13 hexagonal, green arrows) using a ratchet while holding the locknuts with a 15 flat wrench (orange arrows)
-
Photo 2: we also observe the insertion of the wear indicator cable on the inner plate (blue circle) as well as its routing (blue dotted lines)
-
-
-
Photo 1: Once the brake caliper is open, the pads are removed using a flat screwdriver. The wear indicator cable is attached to the inner pad.
-
Photo 2: on the right, the used pads and on the left, the new ones. At the bottom the outer pads and at the top the inner pads where the wear indicator cable will clip.
-
Photo 3: On the left, the new pad and on the right the worn pad. The difference in pad thickness is obvious.
-
-
-
Photo 1: the wear indicator cable is removed by tracing its path (blue dotted lines) from the inner plate and unclipping it from the metal clips (blue circle)
-
Photo 2: we then arrive at a plastic box into which the wear indicator cable is inserted. We open this box by unclipping its cover.
-
Photo 3: Undo the connector (blue arrow) to remove the used wear indicator cable.
-
-
-
Photo 1: in the center the new wear indicator cable, on the periphery the old cable broken at its connection to the plate. (blue circle)
-
Photo 2: we start by connecting the new cable to the box, then we clip it into the various metal clips along its path.
-
Do not connect the cable to the inner board at this step.
-
-
-
Photo 1: the brake piston is pushed back by screwing it back into its housing using a piston pusher.
-
Photo 2: The manual piston pusher is used to push the brake piston back to be able to close the caliper around the pads.
-
Photo 3: The new pads can now be inserted into the caliper. The wear indicator cable is passed through the caliper jaw to secure it to the inner pad. (yellow circle)
-
-
-
Photo 1: at the top a new column screw and at the bottom an old one. We obviously use the new screws supplied with the pads to close the caliper.
-
After reassembling the right rear wheel and putting the vehicle back on the ground, pump the brake pedal several times until it hardens .
-
The same procedure is carried out for the left rear wheel, which is not equipped with a wear indicator cable.
-
Once the 4 rear axle pads have been replaced, avoid sudden braking for the first 500 km.

My X3 has electric parking brakes. Do you know the procedure to completely release the electric brakes?
Thanks in advance.
You have to disassemble the small electrical box held by 2 Torx head screws. Then, just screw the system (a larger Torx) until it stops. It will then be possible to push the piston back completely. Then reassemble everything by lubricating the O-ring of the electrical system with a little WD40.
To the Oscaro team: have you been able to validate this tutorial, I am still waiting for a possible purchase voucher concerning it… thank you

Hello, you must have found the solution by now but I am answering in case anyone else is wondering. I personally used a diagnostic tool to 'rewind' the electric motor.
