Introduction

The model presented is an Alfa Romeo 156 1.9 JTD 110cv

Prepare the equipment before any disassembly.

Position the vehicle on flat ground

It is not necessary to disconnect the battery

It will not be necessary to disconnect the primary and secondary circuit pipes.

A sheet regarding the fuel supply from the RTA can be found in the last step.

  1.
Remove the engine cover using the 13 socket wrench. Unscrew the 4 H-head screws (circled in red in the 1st photo).

Remove the engine oil filler cap to extract the engine cover (circled in blue in the first photo) then replace it immediately afterwards to prevent impurities from entering the upper part of the engine.

    • In the 2nd photo where the engine cover has been removed we can clearly see and access the fuel filtration assembly (circled in yellow).

  2.
Extract the wire located on the fuel filter base using the 13 socket wrench (circled in red in the first photo)

Unscrew the 2 screws from the base without removing them using the 13 socket wrench (This will come at another step) 2nd photo circled in yellow

  3.
Start by extracting the diesel temperature sensor connectors which is in blue and the diesel heater power supply which is in orange. (circled in blue) 1st and 2nd photo.

Use the flathead screwdriver to remove the power connector from the electric heater with a tab. (3rd photo)

  4.
Remove the 2 screws from the base to tilt the fuel filtration element. Then disconnect the water detector circled in blue using the flat screwdriver to 'pop' the clip ring. (1st photo)

Place the small container underneath and unscrew the water detector by hand and only with finger strength because it is a fragile part. (2nd photo black part on the underside) When reassembling, only tighten with finger strength and do not forget the rubber washer.

The liquid should drain into the tray. Wait 30 seconds for it to drain a little.

  5.
Loosen the fuel filter using the oil filter wrench and the flat screwdriver to be placed in one of the two holes (blue line) fixing the base to counteract the effort when turning the wrench to unscrew (1st photo)

Keep the entire base clean until reassembling the new filter

2nd photo the comparison of the 2 filters. Get rid of the bleed screw (yellow arrow). It is useless since in our case the vehicle has a water detector.

    • Before replacing the filter, put a little diesel on the inner and outer seals of the filter (3rd photo) Reassemble the assembly in the reverse order of the steps.

  6.
The diesel circuit purges itself of air, an automatic priming pump is present in the tank and its operation is clearly audible when the ignition is switched on.
    • The diesel circuit purges itself of air, an automatic priming pump is present in the tank and its operation is clearly audible when the ignition is switched on.

    • Turn on the ignition (without starting!) and wait for the purge noise to stop (which corresponds to the operation of the pump associated with the noise generated by the return of air into the tank).

    • Turn off the ignition and repeat as many times as necessary until there is no more abnormal noise (approximately 2 or 3 times). Start the engine. Visually check for leaks by letting the engine run for a while.

Can also be used on alfa 147 same engine. 1.9 jtd, for diesel filter and upper engine mount. 100% identical

I don't know where the air filter is on the 156, but on the 147, from underneath I take a big screwdriver just to hold it open while I take it out or put it in. Obviously first open the 2 "safety airlocks" small metal clips.

Changing the air filter in 5 real minutes..(OK, I removed the engine cover otherwise it would take longer)

The drain bolts are identical for the Alfa 147 and Giulietta JTDM. So no need to pay 8/10ths for the Giulietta but take the 2nd one from the 147 :-)

something else: 147 easy drain power steering fluid… and giulietta no need because electric!!

An Alfa without squeaking is not an Alfa!! :-) besides, they will be my last ones.. because of that..

147 I redid the whole front… and here it is, 1 and a half/2 years later it starts again..(connecting rod/triangle)

and the Giulietta creaks at the back..
