On my model, only the driver's side at the front has a wear sensor.
-
Across the entire E9X range (E90, E91, E92, E93), the pad wear switches are at the front left and rear right (one switch per axle).
-
After disassembly, it is essential to replace the sensor because it loses its ability to hold it in the plate.
-
If you are not changing the pads but only the switch, file the new switch to the same length as the one you are changing.

The contactor comes from the caliper
-
It goes up to a box fixed on the chassis
-
-
-
Using fine pliers, press and remove the switch which is held by a small clip.
-
The 3rd photo shows you a new contactor in new pads.
-
-
-
Remove the bleeder screw cap and then remove the switch.
-
On the shock absorber, remove the switch by pulling it towards the chassis (follow the green arrow).
-
On the support fixed on the chassis, remove the contactor attached at the green square by pulling it towards the shock absorber (green arrow).
-
-
-
Follow the path of the contactor and you will find the connection box circled in red in photos no. 1 and 2.
-
To open it, simply locate the 2 clips located on the underside of the case. Then pull on it and open it wide.
-
The contactor is the one on top in the connection box. To remove it, just pull it slightly.
-
-
-
Once removed, to unplug it you have to press the small tab (framed in red) and pull outwards.
-
Measure the contactor out to order the correct part.
-
-
-
Reassembly is carried out in reverse order.
-
Take advantage of the fact that the contactor is out to give the caliper a quick brush with a wire brush.
-
-
-
Insert the key and turn on the ignition.
-
Press the trip meter reset button so that it is at 0.
-
Turn off the ignition and remove the key.
-
Insert your key and turn on the ignition.
-
Press the trip odometer reset button for several seconds until a triangle appears (photo #1).
-
On the left switch, scroll through the different maintenance operations by pressing the button framed in red in photo no. 2 up or down until you come to the front pads (photo no. 3).
-
Then press the BC button circled in green in photo no. 2.
-
On the screen will display RESET, long press the BC button, a small clock will display next to RESET. When the clock has disappeared you are done.

I have the same problem, dotted lines. Apparently you absolutely have to change the cable (sensor). There is a "hack" to short-circuit the 2 wires of the sensor cable, which allows you to reset without changing the cable, but I haven't tried it.
In the meantime I tried the "hack" and as mentioned by gerritjdijkstra, you have to shunt the front AND the rear to reset the indicator.
I had a cc-id 71 (red light) on a BMW E90 that I was able to resolve with this technique. Impossible otherwise, even with the diagnostic pc. I systematically had dotted lines (-------) on the display. After the temporary shunt (front and rear), I had a cc-id 328 (warning). I then put the sensors back. I hope this could help other people!
Good morning,
Suite:
Normally for the front brakes with the new sensor, the mileage is displayed. On the other hand, for the rear sensor the dotted lines may reappear, but there is no longer a red display. This works in both directions: in case of replacement of the rear sensor, it is necessary to bypass the front sensor (this was my case).
Use: Never leave the shunt in place, as pad wear will no longer be detected. This is a solution temporary reset.
Sincerely.
Good morning,
If the manipulation explained does not work (dotted lines remain on the display), you will have to shunt the rear pad wear sensor. To do this, you can use the old worn or broken sensor: You have to cut the cable about 10 to 20 cm after the connector, on the connector side, strip the two wires inside, then twist the metal strands to make a short circuit (shunt). Insulate the twisted wires to avoid a short circuit to ground which could damage the electronics!! Disconnect the sensor in place, then connect the shunted sensor in its place. If you do not have a sensor, a paper clip can be used as a shunt, but be careful not to damage the female connector on the vehicle side. Repeat the reset manipulation. Once the manipulation is complete, disconnect the shunt and reconnect the sensor in place. Check the reset again.
See continuation below.
Sincerely.
Good morning,
I own a BMW 1 series petrol year 2011 N43B16A and I would like to change the rear brake discs and pads. Should the wear sensor be changed?
Sincerely
