Introduction
Intervention carried out on a 3.0 diesel M57 engine.
You will need a special tool for installing/removing the elastic belt and another for rotating the Damper pulley.
Don't attempt this operation if you don't have them!
Parts
-
-
The belts and rollers are located at the front of the vehicle just behind the engine fan.
-
-
-
Unplug the fan.
-
Remove the screw with a Torx T25.
-
Under the vehicle, remove the screw that holds the exchanger to the fan with a Torx T25.
-
Remove the fan from the top by pulling on it.
-
-
-
The 1st belt is an elastic belt (Damper pulley/power steering pump).
-
The 2nd belt is longer so mark its path carefully before removing it.
-
-
-
The 1st belt can be removed by cutting it if you are not reusing it or by leveraging it with a screwdriver, being careful not to damage the cooling radiator or the grooves of the Damper pulley.
-
Automatic tensioner roller
-
Roller roller
-
Tensioner roller fixing screw
-
To remove the 2nd belt, insert a male T60 Torx socket into the recess provided for this purpose then tighten counterclockwise.
-
While maintaining pressure on the tensioner pulley, remove the belt.
-
-
-
Remove the tensioner roller fixing screw with a T40 Torx key.
-
To remove the idler roller, remove the protective cover using a small flat screwdriver then remove the screw with a 5mm Allen key.
-
-
-
Old coins
-
Broken tensioner roller
-
Pin on the new tensioner roller.
-
Do not remove the pin until the roller is secured to the motor.
-
-
-
Tighten the idler roller with a BTR 5.
-
Leaving the pin in and making sure it won't jump, tighten the tensioner pulley with a T40 Torx.
-
Place the belt, making sure it is properly seated in the grooves of the various pulleys.
-
You will have no trouble placing the belt since the tensioner roller is pinned.
-
Loose belt
-
Using a Torx T60, loosen 1/8 turn to release the pressure on the pin, remove the pin and allow the roller to return to position.
-
once the roller is in position without the pin the tension on the belt is automatically correct.
-
Tight belt

Tool recommended by BMW for reassembling elastic belts. Reference 11 0 331.
-
I do not recommend this tool because it is no longer possible to turn the Damper pulley afterwards.
-
Tool to use
-
Tool recommended by BMW to turn the Damper pulley (if pulley fixed by 4 screws). Reference 11 6 480.
-
So here is what you have to do: present the belt completely on the power steering pump then on top of the Damper pulley, then fix the belt on the pulley using the tool which will hold it in a vice then turn the Damper pulley with tool 11 6 480.
-
Remember to put the vehicle in neutral to be able to turn the Damper pulley.

Is the operation only done from below the vehicle or is it possible to do it from above?
Hello, to mount the rollers, do you have to respect the tightening torque or not?
Hello, I personally had to remove the belt on the air conditioner (which does not have a tensioner) because I had an oil leak on the clutch of the latter (to clean because it made the air conditioner slip) because of the ALU hoses above poorly fixed between the 2 Turbos (2 missing crank pins even though it was done at the dealership...).
In short, to disassemble, easy by removing the air conditioner pulley but to reassemble the toothed belt without tools I was cunning by presenting the belt on the pulley in the right direction of rotation, gave the starter a turn (without starting) and checked, 1 centering notch was missing. I then pushed the belt with the engine running with a large screwdriver, perfect for 60,000 km. To be done from below, so either a pit or a lifting bridge and remove the flat bottom of the engine cover, however I had not removed the fan.
Vehicle: 335D e92 M pack (a little too much on the ground).
Good morning,
Ref 11 6 480 is not the tool for the belt, it is the one for turning the pulley.
I don't know where to find these tools. For my part I made them "by hand" but you can go see a turner-miller with your dimensions to have them custom made.
Hello
I am looking for the tool for the elastic belt where can I find it?
Either the tool Referenced 11 6 480
Thanking you
Have a nice day and good luck
