Introduction

Tutorial made on Polo 1.4tdi 70.

I change the oil once a year on this vehicle. There is nothing really complicated but the car is low and access is very limited. It will be impossible to change the oil while working on the ground: you will either have to use a pit or a bridge as is the case here, or raise the front of the car with two jack stands or two ramps (see the tutorial entitled: Securing the vehicle).

It is best to do the oil change with the engine hot, although this is not mandatory.

  1. 
open the hood

remove the gauge

unscrew the filler cap

unscrew the 9 screws holding the cover, T20 torx key

pull the cover back to remove it

unblock the drain plug using a 19mm wrench

The cap is located at the rear of the engine.

    • Be careful not to burn yourself.

    • don't hesitate to wear gloves

    • don't hesitate to drop the oil pan plug into the pan, you can retrieve it later with a magnet

    • let drain for at least 15 minutes

clean the bell

remove the seal using a small flat screwdriver

install the new gasket (supplied with the filter)

compare the new filter with the used filter (size, diameter, reference)

present the filter

and clip it into the bell (you should hear a "click")

clean the crankcase with a cloth

    • and finish with a 19mm key, torque of 30N.m

lubricate the o-rings

finish with 32mm key, torque of 25N.m

If you have used lifting ramps or jack stands, you will absolutely have to remove them. The oil level must be checked on flat ground.

fill up with 5w30 oil, start with 4 liters

check the level on the gauge: the bottom notch represents the minimum, the top notch the maximum (complete if necessary: we aim to be just below the maximum)
