Introduction

This tutorial explains how to drain and change the oil filter on a Ford Fiesta V 1.3i Petrol from 2004

  1. Warm up the engine for about 5 minutes to make the oil more fluid, which will facilitate its flow without it being too hot, thus avoiding the risk of burns when changing the oil. Apply the handbrake and then raise the front of the vehicle using either jack stands or ramps.

    • Remove the oil filler cap.

  2. Under the vehicle, unscrew the oil drain plug located at the rear of the oil pan one turn using a 13mm socket wrench. Place a drain pan under the drain plug. If using a drain jerrycan, do not forget to remove the 2 upper caps of the jerrycan, otherwise there is a risk of the oil overflowing (circled in red in the photo)

    • It is advisable to replace the drain plug AND its seal, in my case the plug is impeccable and I already had a spare seal.

  5. After completely draining, clean the underside of the oil pan using a degreasing product and a cloth. Replace the new drain plug and tighten it securely. If you have a torque wrench with a 13mm socket, you can tighten to the 25Nm torque recommended by Ford.

    • Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes to allow the oil to circulate through the filter while checking for leaks at the oil filter and drain plug. Then stop the engine and wait a few minutes for the oil to drain back into the oil pan.

  11. Remove the oil dipstick and wipe it with a rag, then replace it. Remove the oil dipstick again and check the oil level, which should be just below the maximum level. If the maximum level is not reached, top up with oil until it is. Replace the oil dipstick.
