Introduction
The oil change can be done at home, by putting the car on flat ground and going underneath (or using lifting ramps for example). A bridge or a pit makes this operation much easier, however.
It is absolutely not necessary for the engine to be hot to drain. That said, warm oil flows much better and much faster.
There are a whole bunch of different tools for removing an oil filter. The tools used here are just one of many possibilities.
-
-
remove the filler cap by turning it 1/4 turn clockwise and pulling upwards
-
locate the oil dipstick
-
It is not necessarily easy to find because it is located right at the crankcase. The gauges are usually much more visible and accessible.
-
and remove it
-
-
-
Using an 8mm square, unblock the drain screw (1/2 turn should be enough)
-
place a drain pan underneath and finish unscrewing the oil pan plug by hand
-
Be careful not to burn yourself.
-
don't hesitate to wear gloves
-
don't hesitate to drop the oil pan plug into the pan, you can retrieve it later with a magnet.
-
let the oil drain for at least 15 minutes
-
-
-
locate the oil filter and make sure the drain pan is underneath
-
unblock the oil filter using the bell and the ratchet wrench
-
The bell I use is a 76-12, with a 3/8 square.
-
finish unscrewing by hand and remove the filter
-
-
-
compare the two filters and make sure they are compatible
-
You can definitely choose an equivalent filter from another brand (Bosch 0 451 103 336, Mecafilter ELH4196, Mann filter - W 75/3...)
-
Do not hesitate to contact a professional if in doubt.
-
clean the filter area with a cloth
-
oil the rubber gasket of the new filter
-
-
-
screw the filter in by hand
-
It is tightened by hand as hard as possible, but it is best not to use a wrench. That said, if you think you do not have enough strength, tighten moderately with the bell and ratchet wrench.
-
-
-
clean the oil pan with a rag
-
screw the cap on by hand
-
Be sure to replace the drain plug gasket. It is a lip seal (Elring 834.823 or any other equivalent reference).
-
tighten the cap moderately with the 8mm square
-
-
-
Using a funnel, fill in 5W40 oil
-
Start by pouring 4 liters.
-
check the level using the gauge and top up if necessary
-
The bottom arrow represents the minimum, the top arrow the maximum. We want to be just below the maximum.
-
replace the dipstick and the oil cap (be careful with the cap, it is a little difficult to lock)
-
-
-
Reinstall the engine cover
-
Using a marker, you can note the date and mileage of the oil change on the plastic cover.
-
start the car and let it run for a minute or two
-
make sure there are no leaks
-
check the level: it may have dropped as the oil filter filled up
-
The level will be checked again in a few hundred kilometers.
-
-
-
The used oil and the filter will be taken to a recycling center or any other facility that can recycle it. This step is an integral part of the oil change.
