Introduction

The oil change on Toyota Auris 2.0 d-4d is done every 20,000 km.

There is nothing really complicated but access to the oil filter is very limited. It will be difficult to remove it while working on the ground: you will either have to use a pit or a bridge as is the case here, or raise the front of the car with two jack stands or two ramps (see the tutorial entitled: Securing the vehicle).

It is best to do the oil change with the engine hot, although this is not mandatory. The car I am working on no longer has its under-engine cover. That is why I am not showing its disassembly/reassembly.

  1.
open the hood

unscrew the filler cap

and take out the oil dipstick
    • open the hood

    • unscrew the filler cap

    • and take out the oil dipstick

    • This will create an air intake, which will facilitate emptying.

  2.
unlock drain plug, 14mm key

Place a pan under the oil pan and finish unscrewing by hand

Be careful not to burn yourself.

    • don't hesitate to wear gloves

    • don't hesitate to drop the oil pan plug into the pan, you can retrieve it later with a magnet

    • let the oil drain for at least 15 minutes

  3.
unlock the bell cap using a 10 square

place the basin under the bell and finish unscrewing the cap by hand

Don't hesitate to drop the cork into the basin; we'll retrieve it later.

    • let the filter drain

    • There is a plastic tip supplied with the new filter that screws onto the bell. I didn't use it but I should have: it allows the oil to be drained from the bell.

  4.
Place the specific tool on the oil filter bell

Toyota bells break very often, so I highly recommend using the right tool.

Using a 27mm socket and a ratchet wrench, unlock the bell

    • finish unscrewing by hand and remove the bell with the filter

    • Oil will leak: empty as much as possible into the basin.

  5.
I cleaned the bell using brake cleaner.

take out the filter

remove the bottom o-ring

    • Torque of 40N.m.

  9.
clean the crankcase with a cloth

change the drain plug gasket

This is a felt seal that will need to be changed systematically (Toyota reference 90430-12028). We can see here that the previous garage installed a seal that was much too large and not compatible.

  10.
pour 5l of 5w30 oil

check the level

The gauge has 2 marks: the bottom arrow indicates the minimum, the top arrow the maximum. We try to be just below the maximum.

    • If you have used jack stands or jack stands, you must absolutely put the car back on the ground. The level is done on flat ground.

  11.
replace the cap and dipstick

start the vehicle

check for leaks
    • replace the cap and dipstick

    • start the vehicle

    • check for leaks

    • We will check the oil level one last time after a few kilometers: the level will have dropped since the filter will have filled up.

    • Press the button to the right of the meter and turn on the ignition. Keep it pressed until the end of the countdown.

  12.
The used oil and the filter will be taken to a recycling center or any other facility that can recycle it. This step is an integral part of the oil change.
