Introduction
Changing the water pump is quite simple on E36.
The original ones are known to be fragile, so it is important to replace them.
Parts
-
-
The operation will take place on a 316i, the operation is similar on the 1.6L and 1.8L engines
-
The water pump is located at the front of the engine
-
The fan unit can be easily removed (to save space) by unscrewing the two upper 10 nuts and pulling it upwards.
-
-
-
Remove the plastic cover from the tensioner using a flat screwdriver.
-
Loosen the belt by turning the tensioner pulley counterclockwise using a Torx wrench.
-
-
-
Then remove the previously loosened nuts in order to remove the pulley.
-
-
-
Remove the 4 screws around the water pump (3 nuts of 13 and an allen screw)
-
-
-
Slowly screw in two nuts on each side of the pump (the ones unscrewed previously are suitable) in order to push the pump. It is important to tighten the screws gradually, 1/4 turn on one, 1/4 turn on the other, this is to avoid breaking the very fragile pump body.
-
Gently tap the pump while extracting.
-
Prepare a container to collect any coolant that leaks.
-
-
-
Compare the new water pump. Check the presence of the O-ring on the body of the new water pump.
-
-
-
Install the new water pump and moderately tighten (10 Nm) the 4 fixing nuts.
-
Reattach the pulley.
-
-
-
Replace the belt as shown.
-
Rotate the tensioner roller counterclockwise to bring it closer to the belt and thus position it on it.
-
-
-
Replace the roller cover and fan if removed.
-
Fill the expansion tank with coolant and bleed it.
