Introduction

Changing the water pump is quite simple on E36.

The original ones are known to be fragile, so it is important to replace them.

  1.
The operation will take place on a 316i, the operation is similar on the 1.6L and 1.8L engines

    • The fan unit can be easily removed (to save space) by unscrewing the two upper 10 nuts and pulling it upwards.

  2.
Loosen the 4 10 nuts holding the water pump pulley.

  6.
Slowly screw in two nuts on each side of the pump (the ones unscrewed previously are suitable) in order to push the pump. It is important to tighten the screws gradually, 1/4 turn on one, 1/4 turn on the other, this is to avoid breaking the very fragile pump body.

Gently tap the pump while extracting.

Prepare a container to collect any coolant that leaks.
