Introduction
This tutorial explains how to change the fuel filter on a BMW 1 series 116d
Tools
Parts
-
-
Raise the car using a ramp because the filter is located underneath the car.Securing the vehicle: removing and refitting the wheel
-
Remove the central flat bottom. To do this, remove the 8 screws with an 8-mm socket wrench or ratchet.
-
The filter is located to the left of the gearbox.
-
-
-
Using a small flat-head screwdriver, loosen the clamp and disconnect the hose on the outlet side of the filter. Caution: place a container underneath as diesel will leak out.
-
-
-
Using a large flat-head screwdriver, lift the clip and finish extracting it with your hand, then disconnect the filter housing by gently pulling it backwards. Be careful not to lose the flat gasket, which may fall out.
-
Using a 13mm wrench, unscrew the clamp that secures the filter to the car.
-
-
-
Check the dimensions between the new fuel filter and the old one
-
Fit the collar onto the new one using a t20 torx key
-
Reattach the filter to the car
-
-
-
Install the flat gasket
-
Connect the housing to the filter. Be careful, there is a keying tab. Replace the clip.
-
Reconnect the hose to the filter outlet then tighten the clamp.
-
Raise the bottom of the car.
-
-
-
There is no manual bleeding to be done. Put the key in and press the start button without pressing the clutch pedal so as not to start. Wait a minute without doing anything. And then you can start.

Thanks Nicolas for this tutorial.
I have just changed the diesel filter on my 118D E87 N47 engine from December 2008.
On the old original BMW filter reference 13327811227, it is also noted MAHLE KL 169/4. If you want to buy original quality, you will have to opt for the MAHLE brand (or KNECHT which is the same company) with the reference KL 169/4D. Two gaskets are supplied with the new filter: the very thin flat gasket mentioned in the tutorial and a small gasket that can replace the old one on the housing that will fit into the filter (see the 3rd photo step 3).
To avoid having too much air in the circuit, I had fun filling the new filter with diesel (with caps to close the filter while installing it). I pressed the Start button for 1 second (without engaging the clutch), waited 1 minute (repeated the operation a 2nd time). When starting, the starter works for 3 seconds, then the engine finally starts (this seems long because it always starts at the quarter turn normally!)
There is no fuel filter in a gasoline engine…
Hello, for priming, do you have to hold down for 1 minute? Or just hold down and wait 1 minute?
THANKS
Why after changing the fuel filter do you have to put the key in and "press start and stop without pressing the clutch so as not to start and finally wait 5 minutes to start"?
Because the automatic purge is done like this
