Introduction
Check and replace the front brake discs and pads on a Citroën Berlingo 1.6 HDi FAP 92 cv vehicle
-
-
-
Check the wear of the brake disc and pads.
-
The disc must have a maximum wear of 2mm in total (1mm on each side) and must not have any pronounced holes or scratches. The pads must not reach the iron. If the discs are worn, the pads must be changed.
-
Measure the diameter of the disc to confirm that the new model you have is the same.
-
Turn the steering wheel to the right or left to easily access the brake caliper
-
-
-
Using the screwdriver, gradually push back the pad clamping piston
-
Remove the two dust covers
-
Using the 7 mm Allen key, unscrew the two fixing columns the stirrup to the support
-
-
-
Remove the spring from its location on the outside
-
Remove the brake caliper from its support and place it on the spare wheel which you will slide underneath, or hang it on the shock absorber using a wire, so as not to put pressure on the brake fluid hose.
-
Remove the two brake pads from their locations
-
The piston side brake pad is easily removed by hand
-
Using the wire brush, brush the inside of the caliper
-
-
-
Unscrew the two nuts using the E16 female Torx key. Do not hesitate to spray with penetrating oil if necessary.
-
Using the wire brush, clean the brake caliper bracket
-
Using the wire brush and possibly a knife, clean the threads of the Torx nuts in order to remove the used thread lock.
-
-
-
Remove the two screws using the T30 male Torx key
-
Spray penetrating oil if necessary on the wheel spindle and/or using a hammer, tap the inside of the brake disc to remove it.
-
Using the wire brush, clean the wheel spindle
-
-
-
Position the new brake disc in its location and replace the two Torx screws
-
Apply normal thread lock to the two Torx nuts of the caliper bracket
-
Replace the caliper bracket and secure it with its two nuts
-
It is not necessary to clean brake discs with a layer of paint, which will disappear during the first braking, unlike those covered with anti-corrosion oil, which must be cleaned with a brake cleaner.
-
-
-
Position both brake pads on their corresponding locations
-
Position the brake caliper in its location
-
Tighten the two nuts with the 7 mm Allen key and replace the two dust covers.
-
Using the screwdriver, replace the spring on the outside of the caliper
-
Press the brake pedal repeatedly until it stiffens. After this, you should notice that the brake piston squeezes the pads against the disc.
-
-
-
Reassemble the wheel as instructed in the manufacturer's manual
-
Respect a running-in period of at least 300km or even 500km depending on the type of roads used and driving. In fact, the brakes are less efficient because the contact surfaces are still smooth and not very effective. For your safety, increase the safety distances. To preserve your brakes: avoid sudden and prolonged braking

Thanks for this very well done tutorial. I prefer to use a piston pusher rather than a screwdriver which could damage the piston if it is a little seized. A tip to put the spring back on the outside of the caliper, I put a little grease in the upper hole and I use a small pliers to put the end of the spring in while pressing on the top of the spring, otherwise it is quite a hassle.
Top the list
THANKS

Good procedure. Too bad no tightening torque is mentioned as it is very important.
