Introduction
This tutorial shows you how to replace the accessory belt on a Ford Fiesta V 1.3i Petrol from 2004.
-
-
The accessory belt is located on the right side of the engine block. It is only accessible after removing the grille and then the right headlight.
-
-
-
Unclip the two hooks that hold the grille on the right and left.
-
Tilt the grille slightly backwards to access the lower clips.
-
-
-
Disengage each clip and hook located on the lower part of the grille.
-
You can completely remove the grille, allowing access to one of the headlight screws.
-
-
-
Unscrew the 3 screws holding the headlight using a Torx T30 screwdriver.
-
Slightly move the headlight aside without removing it in order to access its electrical connector located at the rear.
-
Disconnect the electrical connector from the headlight, to do this press the plastic tab then pull the connector.
-
Extend the headlight completely.
-
-
-
For better accessibility of the belt, it is preferable to move the pipe connected to the power steering fluid reservoir away from the work area.
-
To do this, unclip the plastic clip that holds the conduit to the frame.
-
Remove the duct from the clip.
-
-
-
Remove the power steering fluid reservoir by lifting it upwards.
-
Move the power steering fluid reservoir and hose away from the work area.
-
-
-
The accessory belt drives the following: Water pump, power steering pump, alternator, crankshaft pulley, and passes through an idler pulley and tensioner roller.
-
This belt is removed by simply tilting the tensioner roller clockwise using a 15mm ring spanner, which has the effect of relaxing the belt.
-
For more leverage, place another ring spanner in the fork part of the 15mm spanner (see photo) which allows the tensioner pulley to be tilted as far as possible and thus facilitates the extraction of the belt via the power steering pump pulley.
-
-
-
Keep the roller taut and extract the belt through the power steering pump pulley.
-
Release the pressure on the tensioner roller so that it returns to its position.
-
Remove the belt completely from the engine compartment.
-
-
-
Check that the length of the new belt is identical to the old one.
-
Also check that it has the same number of ribs.
-
-
-
The belt has a direction of assembly to be respected (arrow marking on it) which corresponds to the direction of rotation of the crankshaft pulley, i.e. clockwise.
-
Place the new accessory belt starting with the least accessible pulleys, i.e. those of the water pump, the tensioner roller, the crankshaft pulley, the alternator and the idler pulley, ensuring that the ribs are perfectly seated in the grooves of the pulleys.
-
Rotate the tensioner pulley clockwise with the 15mm wrench and finish placing the belt on the power steering pump pulley.
-
-
-
Release the tension on the tensioner pulley after ensuring that the belt ribs are perfectly seated in the pulley grooves.
-
Using a 19 wrench (preferably a ratchet) engaged with the crankshaft pulley screw, turn the latter clockwise several turns to ensure that the belt is correctly positioned.
-
-
-
-
Replace the conduit and close its retaining clip.
-
Replace the power steering fluid reservoir in its lugs.
-
-
-
Replace the headlight and reconnect its electrical connector, making sure to clip it securely.
-
Screw in the 3 Torx T30 screws
-
-
-
Tilt the grille, making sure to place the hood release tab on top.
-
Finish by replacing the upper grille hooks.

On the model with air conditioning, two people are required for reassembly. One person releases the tensioner roller with a 15mm socket wrench (I personally also pressed the wrench with a thick rod to increase the downward rotation) and the second person puts the belt on the pulley by leveraging with a fairly thick flat screwdriver.
