Introduction

Changing the accessory belt return roller Clio 2 1.5 Dci without air conditioning with manual tensioner.

Clio 2s without air conditioning have a return roller that takes the place of the air conditioning compressor. The tensioner is manual on models before 2005. When the bearing starts to squeak, the roller must be changed or it will break.

  1.
You will need this type of key, it is angled in both directions, size 13.

    • Never run the engine without the accessory belt.

    • The belt has 5 teeth and the pulley 6. The notch furthest towards the inside must be left free.

  2.
Disconnect the negative terminal.
    • Disconnect the negative terminal.

    • Removing the negative terminal prevents the battery from short-circuiting if the bodywork is touched with a tool.

  3.
Raise the vehicle and secure it, I used beams here so as not to bend the side skirts.

    • Remove the mudguard clips.

    • Remove the T25 screws

    • Remove the bumper bolt.

    • Repeat the previous 3 steps on the other side. You can now remove the bumper and grille by unclipping each side.

    • Pay attention to the centering stud located in the middle of the bumper.

  4.
Unscrew the 16 bolt to facilitate access for later

Put down the mass, be careful it is heavy.

Unscrew the two 13 bolts on the tensioner roller.

This bolt is in an oblong hole which allows the tensioner to be adjusted.

    • This bolt is the rotation axis of the tensioner roller.

    • Remove the belt.

    • The belt is already removed to make taking pictures easier.

  6.
Remove the two upper 13 mm bolts. Use the offset wrench to unscrew the left one and pass it through one of the holes in the pulley.

At the end of the arrow, you can see a hole in the pulley that will allow the key to pass through. Finish unscrewing by hand, otherwise the key will remain blocked.

Rotate the idler roller in the direction of the green arrow.

    • Rotate the idler roller in the direction of the green arrow.

    • Remove the last bolt by passing a small universal joint through the hole behind the anti-vibration mass.

    • Any belt that has been removed must be replaced.

    • The tensioner bolts do not need to be tightened.

    • Refit in reverse order. The bolts cannot be tightened to the specified torque because the torque wrench will not fit.

  7.
Make the tool mot.1638 with a threaded rod (or a threaded hook), a washer and a long nut.

Put it in place like in the picture and start tightening.

    • On your smartphone, download an application to measure the frequency of the belts.

    • There are different solutions, Carbon Drive from GATES, Tension2go from ContiTech or Easy Tension from Hutchinson.

    • These apps only work with their own belt models.

    • For my part, I downloaded a measurement system for music. The name is CarlTune.

    • You have to bring the smartphone microphone as close as possible to the longest strand, the one that is horizontal to the ground. Then move the strap with your finger, read the value indicated. The frequency must be 233hz +/- 5hz.

    • Once the value is reached, tighten the two tensioner roller bolts.

  8.
Turn the crankshaft two times clockwise. Check that everything is OK.

    • Reassemble the elements in reverse order.

Great tutorial, especially your system for tensioning the belt as well as the app for checking the tension, not forgetting all the explanatory photos. Well done, even a novice in mechanics can succeed thanks to you 👍🙌 too strong.

Is it possible to follow this tutorial if I have a Clio 2 with air conditioning?

Great tutorial, for my part I took the kit from GATES with their application and it's perfect! Thank you very much!
