Introduction
The battery light was on on this Saxo and the voltage measured at the battery with the engine running indicated 12 volts when it should have displayed at least 14 volts. The power steering and ventilation were no longer working. The alternator was apparently the cause.
A new alternator being very expensive, I opted for a second-hand one. It is essential to ensure compatibility before purchasing the replacement part because several models exist. Only the reference will really inform us about compatibility.

-
-
the negative battery terminal is on the right
-
unscrew the screw of the negative terminal, 8mm flat wrench
-
and put her aside
-
-
-
There is normally a heat shield on the alternator that needs to be removed (there are two screws to undo I think) but it was not present on this vehicle.
-
remove the cap from the wire + battery of the alternator
-
unscrew the nut using the 13mm wrench
-
put the wire aside
-
-
-
lift the tab on the alternator regulator electrical plug (it's underneath)
-
and remove the plug
-
You may have a terminal with a nut instead of the plug, you just need to unscrew this nut (8mm wrench I think) and remove the terminal as for the + battery wire from the alternator.
-
put the beam on hold on the side (I left it on the spar)
-
-
-
unscrew the alternator belt tension adjustment screw, 10mm wrench, and remove it
-
unscrew the upper alternator mounting nut, 13mm wrench
-
and remove the screw
-
-
-
unscrew the lower fixing screw, 16mm key without removing it
-
and push on the alternator
-
to put it in stop
-
-
-
remove the alternator belt
-
remove the lower mounting screw and remove the alternator
-
Be very careful not to damage the alternator. If you have a deposit, you will need to return it in good condition.
-
-
-
If and only if you don't need to return the old alternator to get the deposit back, you can open it up to inspect it. Sometimes it's easily repairable. I was convinced from the start that the alternator was dead, I opened it up out of curiosity.
-
we see here that the alternator has heated up
-
the coals have completely disappeared
-
and the rotor collector rings are completely HS: the alternator is economically irreparable
-
-
-
compare the 2 alternators:
-
points de fixation
-
pulleys
-
connectors
-
Again, we will have ensured in advance the compatibility of the parts using the reference. This check is just a visual check.
-
-
-
the alternator belt was very damaged
-
so I replaced it
-
We can also take advantage of this to check the damper pulley.
-
-
-
introduce the alternator by first inserting the upper fixing screw
-
advance the nut by hand
-
insert and hand tighten the lower fixing screw
-
-
-
install the belt in the grooves
-
Replace the tension adjustment screw and tighten (10mm wrench) until you obtain approximately 1cm of deflection in the middle of the belt
-
-
-
Once the tension adjustment is done, tighten the upper alternator fixing screw, 13mm wrench
-
then the lower fixing screw, 16mm key
-
Check the tension again and adjust if necessary.
-
-
-
replace the terminal + battery of the alternator and tighten the nut, 13mm wrench
-
plug in the electrical plug
-
replace the protective cap
-
Reinstall the heat shield if you have it. Although it is not an essential part, it is best to get one. I will install it on this vehicle later.
-
-
-
put in place the negative terminal
-
and tighten it, 8mm key
-
start the car and check with a multimeter that the alternator is working properly
