Introduction

We will see how to replace the fuel filter on a Golf VI Diesel (here the model equipped with the engine code CAYC). The procedure is identical for all diesel models of the Golf VI generation.

When to replace your fuel filter?

The manufacturer recommends replacing the diesel filter every 60,000 km.

Personally, I find this change spacing much too long, especially if your high-pressure pump tends to generate fine filings (in very weak quantity, the presence of filings in the diesel filter is not considered abnormal - manufacturer's source). Everyone will form their own opinion on the matter...

I advise you to replace this filter every 30,000 km.

For quality work and to preserve your engine, I also recommend a complete cleaning of the fuel tank (simple and quick operation) ----> requires a liter of clean diesel.

  1.
Secure the vehicle (apply handbrake) and open the engine hood
    • Secure the vehicle (apply handbrake) and open the engine hood

    • Remove the upper engine cover for easier work

    • Locate the fuel filter jar

    • Protect the diesel tank area with a generous amount of paper towel to prevent fuel from splashing into the engine compartment.

  2.
Unscrew the 5 torx screws with a T30 bit

Use a flat screwdriver to lever the metal tab to lift the cover.
    • Unscrew the 5 torx screws with a T30 bit

    • Use a flat screwdriver to lever the metal tab to lift the cover.

    • Remove the filter cartridge and recycle it.

    • Remove the O-ring using a small flat screwdriver and recycle it

    • Be careful not to damage the seal groove when removing it: there is no need to force it, as the seal has a certain elasticity.

  3.
Remove the 2 hex head screws and the hex nut with a 10 mm hex socket.

Remove the fuel jar and drain it. Recycle the used fuel.

Clean the jar with a lint-free cloth
    • Remove the 2 hex head screws and the hex nut with a 10 mm hex socket.

    • Remove the fuel jar and drain it. Recycle the used fuel.

    • Clean the jar with a lint-free cloth

    • Reinstall the jar in the reverse order of its disassembly.

    • Tip for easily replacing screws and nuts in restricted areas: lightly coat the heads with grease to ensure that the screws/nuts are held in place with the socket imprint. This way, there will be no risk of losing the screws when you want to replace them!

    • Insert the new filter cartridge and fill the container with diesel fuel almost to the level of the container in order to avoid as much as possible the risk of the pump losing its prime.

    • Coat the new O-ring with clean diesel fuel and insert it into its groove, being careful not to twist it.

    • Replace the cover (diesel will overflow but this will prevent the fuel circuit from being deprimed) and tighten the 5 torx screws to a torque of 5 Nm

  4.
Replace the upper engine cover
    • Replace the upper engine cover

    • Turn the ignition on and off about ten times to allow the fuel pump to prime the circuit properly (in case too much air has entered)

    • (optional) If you have a diagnostic case (VCDS ideally) you can help with priming the fuel pump. Refer to the many dedicated tutorials on the net.

    • Start the vehicle and let it run for a good minute.

    • Check for leaks in the fuel tank

    • Close the engine hood.

    • Turn off the vehicle

Good morning,

I have a big problem with my Golf Plus 2005 2L - 140 HP - 16V TDI. Over time, the diesel filter support has welded onto the filter... impossible to separate the filter to replace it... so I'm looking for an equivalent second-hand filter support, but I can't... If you have any tips for finding this part, I'm interested. Thank you for your feedback.

Hello. I think you need to put 1 liter of diesel in a bottle and fill the tank to the brim before closing the filter cover to make priming easier.

Same problem the last 2 times I changed my GO filter

Normally, suitcase needed and cycle GO pump 2 times

Not having the case, I inserted a bulb at the pump entrance, it starts immediately, let it run for 2 minutes, remove the bulb, restart and it's ok

We turned the ignition on at least ten times and tried to start it by towing it.

Hello, I have a problem with a golf6 plus 1.6 tdi 105hp Bluemotion. It may be related to the diesel filter but I'm not sure. My mechanic changed an injector return, the air was purged but the car refuses to start. It stalls immediately. We tried the pilot start. Could it come from the diesel filter. I also saw that you need the VCDS case to restart it but my mechanic doesn't have it. What do you think? Thank you for your answers
