Introduction

Replacing the catalyst on the 1.2 VTI petrol engine (Peugeot or Citroën) following the engine light coming on while driving.

The task is simple and allows you to avoid a very large bill at the garage.

  1.
Start by raising the vehicle on jack stands

The vehicle must be cold.

Open the hood and locate the catalyst
    • Start by raising the vehicle on jack stands

    • The vehicle must be cold.

    • Open the hood and locate the catalyst

    • Disconnect both sensors by pulling the orange latch to the left

    • Detach each sensor plug from its bracket on the engine by lifting the black latch behind the plug on the engine side.

  2.
On the upper part of the engine, unscrew the 4 nuts with a 13mm socket

On the lower part, loosen the nut (16mm flat spanner) of the fixing collar between the bottom of the catalyst and the exhaust line then remove the collar.

Remove the 2 nuts from the mounting bracket with a 13mm socket

  3.
The catalyst is now free. Remove it from the bottom of the engine by pulling it towards the front of the vehicle.

Replace the two gaskets with those supplied with the new catalyst. Otherwise, if the two metal gaskets on the engine outlet are in good condition, it is not necessary to replace them.

On the catalyst, remove the heat shield by unfolding the horny part to the side using pliers.

    • The reason for the failure is a cracked catalyst, a chronic failure on early 1.2 VTI models.

  4.
Remove the two probes from your catalytic converter (with a size 22 open-end wrench) and install them on the new catalytic converter.

Reinstall the heat shield on the new catalyst, if it does not have one.

Tighten the probes firmly without forcing them too much.

    • Catalyst comparison (nine on left)

    • Reassemble in reverse order. Tighten all nuts firmly, but do not overtighten.

    • Start the vehicle and check at approximately 2000 rpm for air leaks at both ends of the catalyst.
